Jazz in the Canyon Box Dinners

Box Dinners will be available at Pops Performing Arts for Jazz in the Canyon, as follows:

Box Dinners for June 28th, 29th and 30th performances:

$ 15 Lunch Box Jazz in the Canyon Dinner: Spiced rubbed picnic chicken thighs (served cold), red potato salad, summer veggie salad with corn green green beans and cherry tomatoes. Cash or check.

Wed 6/29, 6:30pm-7pm, speaker starts at 7:30pm,  Allison & Victor start at 8 pm

Sat June 25 8 pm Vocalist Carlye & Guitarist Don Cornell

Originally from Sacramento, Carlye has been singing jazz standards for 20+ years in Mendocino County on the coast and in the Ukiah/Willits area in combo and big band settings. Some of her influences are Carmen McCray, Betty Carter, Lambert Hendricks and Ross, Robert Plant and Sting. She also plays a mean harmonica if you can talk her into it.
A recent transplant to the Mt Shasta area from Cleveland Ohio, Don studied jazz guitar at Cleveland State University with Bob Frazier. He has been playing jazz, blues and fusion for 20+ years in combo and big band settings with influences ranging from Joe Pass, John McLaughlin, and Wes Montgomery to Frank Zappa and Jeff Beck.
Steve Lehman will be joining them on bass.

Tues June 28 8 pm Theno & Friends

Dave-ThenoDave Theno (guitar, ukulele, vocals) spent 10 years as a singer-songwriter and guitarist / bassist in several Sacramento bands before moving to Siskiyou County in 1996.  In recent years he has pursued his love for swing guitar, early blues, vintage country, and Tin Pan Alley songwriting by performing these classic songs solo and in small groups. Theno and his special guests will play and sing out of the “Great American Songbook;” with songs by Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and other originators of popular song, from early-century composers of the 20’s and 30’s. Kids 12 and under free.

Wed June 29, 8 pm, Allison & Victor + Midnight Band

2EarthAliveshoesINDIGOGO copyRecognized as the 2015 Spring edition Southern Oregon Magazine’s “Music Pick”, this eclectic duo with Allison on guitar and vocals and Victor on tenor saxophone enjoys performing wineries, festivals, theaters all over the West Coast. With their ever evolving
sound of jazz, blues, pop, and Latin flavors this duo has released three C Ds? as well as shared the stage with blues legend John Hammond, Acoustic Alchemy, Tuck and Patti, and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

stefanStefan Schittko–who also plays with R&B band Sound Advice, and has played in the Ted Taforo Jazz Collective—will be performing on keyboards as alongside a guest drummer. They will be performing at multiple locations during Jazz in the Canyon. They will also be  embarking on their campaign to raise funds on Indigogo See their website for details Listen here.

Thur June 30, 8 pm Jerry Moore Trio + Vocalist Doug Arrington

Jerry-Moore-235x300Dr. Jerry Moore, piano, is a part-time resident of Siskiyou County, spending most of his time in the Bay Area performing and teaching. He is retired from the music department at College of the Redwoods in Eureka, California, where he taught music theory, band and world music. He last performed at Pops Performing Arts and Cultural Center in July 2015 with his two sons, Greg Moore, Trombone, and Michael Moore, saxophone/clarinet. Michael is well known in European Jazz Circles.

Doug Arrington is a warm, intimate and intense performer. His incredible voice range and  charismatic personality give him the power to  control the mood of his audience as a vocalist.

Professional acclaim has come to Doug throughout the world including Japan and other Far Eastern engagements. He also performed in Australia and Europe. He resides in the San Francisco Bay Area and has been a headliner in the prominent night clubs and hotels.

An “Oakland Tribune” critic wrote that “Arrington is in complete control of his voice”. It shows in his phrasing, which comes about as close a singer can get to what has been called “elegant”.

Sat, Jul 2, 8 pm Ananta Fiddle-Hooper & Shattered Chaos

A.-Fiddler-Hooper-300x200Ananta Fiddle-Hooper is joined by her band ‘Shattered Chaos’ to bring Siskiyou County an evening of electrified world jazz fusion and electro-trance compositions inspired by eastern-european, asian, middle-eastern and western musical influences. Ms. Fiddle-Hooper will bring an array of instruments to the stage including violin, electric violin, cello and sultry vocals. She will be joined by her band ‘Shattered Chaos’ with Paul Lamb on bass, Tony Luerra on drums, Greg Jeter on rhythm guitar and Ms. Fiddle-Hooper. She will join the ‘Jazz in the Canyon Events’ on Saturday, July 2nd, 8 p.m. at the POPS Performing Arts and Cultural Center. Sun, Jul 4th 6pm – Caili O’Doherty Ensemble

A native of Portland, Oregon, Caili O’Doherty has received national awards for jazz piano performance and composition from Downbeat Magazine, as well as an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer award. She has performed at jazz festivals in Toronto, Monterey, Panama, Ireland, Boston, Portland, and a lot more. Tickets in Mt. Shasta at Village Books and in Dunsmuir at Dunsmuir Hardware, and at the door. They are $15.

Pops participates in Dunsmuir’s 5th Annual Jazz in the Canyon

headerIn the spirit of co-creation and collaboration, Dunsmuir will come together to celebrate one of America’s own true art form with the 5th Annual Jazz in the Canyon. Multiple venues will feature many Northern California’s favorite jazz musicians and visiting guest artists from June 24-July 4th, 2016.

Jazz in the Canyon honors the broad influences of jazz that mirrors the vast melting pot in American culture. Listeners will be treated to everything from blues to swing, bebop to gypsy jazz, smooth jazz to Latin jazz, some funk, and eclectic fusions of roots and folk music infused with jazz.
