Advanced tickets available for $15. They will be $20 at the door.

Johnny Rawls is from Purvis, Mississippi, a small town with about 2,000 residents near Hattiesburg. While still in high school he played guitar with soul music greats Little Johnny Taylor, The Sweet Inspirations, Joe Tex and ZZ Hill. Rawls hooked up with a true legend when he became bandleader for O.V. Wright, working and learning with the man many consider the finest deep soul singer of them all. After Wright died in 1980, Rawls led the O.V. Wright band for 13 years, touring and backing up B.B. King, Bobby “Blue” Bland and and Little Milton.

Johnny Rawls is on the tour that never ends. Since going out on his own, he’s been on a relentless jaunt from club to club, festival to festival, nation to nation. And the long road comes through Dunsmuir on Thursday, December 13, as Rawls comes to the POPS venue with his “Northern California All-stars.”. He will have spent November in Europe, and early December in Utah. Before December’s over he will also perform in Indiana, New York, and at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago.
Johnny’s style of music can best be termed “soul blues,” and his warm, engaging manner draws the listener into his stories. The irony and glory of love give him plenty to sing about, and his show features his knockout guitar playing underlining his vocals. His recent album, Tiger in a Cage, went to number one on the Living Blues radio charts in its first month of release. He recently told me, “I’ve been playing around northern California for 15 years now, and it’s really a one-of-a-kind area. There’s some great people there, some great Blues fans. I love playing there.”

The North State All Stars are joining Johnny Rawls

We hope everyone comes out to see this real deal blues and soul legend playing with the Northstate All Stars.
We do have a ball when Johnny comes to town, and it’s a real-deal showcase for deep south soul and joy when his journey from Purvis comes through northern California.

Allison & Victor + Midnight Band will play at Pops, May 19 at 7 pm, $10 at the door.

Allison Scull and Victor Martin’s unusual collaborative style–singer-songwriter plus saxophone–connects grown-ups and little people alike. Together, they create a fusion of musical forms uniquely their own. They blend roots music — a fusion of jazz, folk, blues, a little funk, originals and some jazz standards laced with some French lyrics. Allison learned French where she grew up in Belgium while Victor was born and raised in Middletown, Delaware.

As a duo, Allison and Victor have shared the stage with The Blind Boys of Alabama, Tuck and Patti, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Craig Chaquico, Shana Morrison, Archie Lee Hooker, Acoustic Alchemy, blues legend John Hammond, Lazy Lester, famed drummer Akira Tana, hall of famer Terry Robb and most recently Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Their constant performance schedule has contributed to their growing fan base on the West Coast, USA. While their music has struck a chord in the wine country of Northern California and Oregon as well as the festival circuit, Allison and Victor also perform in Arizona and in Mexico.  In 2021 and 2022,  they were honored to be invited to perform for the first and second Juneteenth Celebration at the Coos History
Museum in Coos Bay Oregon. Mostly performing as a duo, they have also developed a show with a stellar array of musicians in their Midnight Band which include Stefan Schittko on keyboard, Bruce Calin as well as percussionist Michael P. Harris and drummer Patrick Wiseman.

While their original song “Esperanza” was nominated in Top 10 by the International Association of Independent Recording Artists, Allison and Victor have performed at the longest running festival, the Oregon Coast, the Oregon Coast Music Festival. Other festivals include Nor Cal Jazz Festival (Weaverville, CA, Chico, CA & Dunsmuir, CA), Art and the Vineyard (Eugene, OR), the Napa Artisan’s Festival, the Shasta Yama Festival (Mt. Shasta, CA), a Taste of Redding (Redding, CA), and the famous Cranberry Festival (Bandon,OR). They also perform at State Fairs and other venues including Lassen Volcanic National Park, the famed Derby and Genghis Cohen in Hollywood, and even an olive oil Company. Allison and Victor also perform for Performing Art Centers, Theaters and house concerts and private parties.

Voted as the “Music Pick” for the Spring Edition of Southern Oregon Magazine 2015 and featured again in the Summer Edition 2016, Allison Scull and Victor Martin’s unusual collaborative style, singer-songwriter plus saxophone, connects to grown-ups and little people alike. Together they create a fusion of musical forms uniquely their own. They blend roots music — a fusion of jazz, folk, blues, a little funk, originals and some jazz standards laced with some French lyrics. Allison learned French alongside her sisters, where she grew up in Belgium. Victor was born and raised on the East Coast in Delaware.

Allison and Victor have released several recordings: From the Back Burner, Allison Scull and Victor Martin Live, and Cool Like the Breeze. They have just completed their Nation of Jubilation album due out for release in January of 2023.

This duo, along with Allison’s twin sister, Suzanne, organize Jazz in the Canyon, a four day, multi-venue event spanning over the last weekend of September in the historic train town of Dunsmuir, CA. Given the Siskiyou Arts Council Achievement Award for their dedication to the arts in their own community, they are also garnering fans nationally and internationally.

We also salt each set with reinterpretations of older folk tunes and ballads – and original material.  Based in Northern California with a focus on regional venues and festivals in California and Oregon, the band typically performs as in a traditional 5-piece format but also appears as a trio and duet.

Ron McCloud Retirement Party

Ron McCloud Retirement Party-Everyone is invited!

Ron McCloud Retirement Party

For 47 years, Ron and Pat McCloud have proudly held the honor of being the longest running business in Dunsmuir. He was a banker from the Bay Area looking for a special place to raise his family.

Ron’s affection for Dunsmuir was such that he took his time selling the Dunsmuir True Value Hardware Store, waiting for the right buyer. He found that buyer in Jake and Nova Gress.

Jake and Nova lived in McCloud and started their family there, two of the boys live there still with their grandson. They always wanted to return to be closer to their family.

Jake has been a contractor in California and Idaho for 23 years, since 2000, a vocation uniquely suiting him for being a hardware store proprietor. Nova’s background in bookkeeping is a valuable asset for the successful management of their business.

Jake says he hasn’t run a hardware store before, but is retaining the employees, Dylan Brockman and Kevin Tinsky, to teach him what he needs to know and to continue the tradition of excellent customer service with a hometown feel.

Ron, when asked for some words of wisdom, returned a blank stare! How do you sum up your life in a couple of words?

In recognition of the McClouds years of service to our business community, the Dunsmuir Chamber is sponsoring a retirement party at POPS Performing Arts and Cultural Center, 5819 Sacramento Avenue, Saturday January 14 from 5-7pm. Doors open at 4:30. $15/person advance tickets will go on sale at the hardware store on Friday January 6. Don’t wait! Tickets at the door will be $20.

A fabulous menu by Lunchbox Dinners will include:

• Crostini: Smoked salmon

eggplant Caponata

• Chicken Wings

• Mini tostados: Shrimp & mango Salsa

• Caprese Skewers

• Focaccia pizza

• No host bar
