Message from the Playright’s GoFundMe Page:
I started a year long research journey that took me to Africa 5 years ago. Since then, I’ve written as well as workshoped this play based on the life and artistry of Nina Simone and The Disinherited characters she sang about. I’m not the only one deeply moved by this music. When I met Gina, I knew imediatley, she was my Nina. Having the same regal appearance as Nina is only the outward similiarity that drew me to Gina. She has a voice with a texture rich and entirely unpredictable, just like Nina; also studied Classical Music at Spelman College & Jazz off campus. As writer/creator, I deliver an 16 character interpretation which includes MLK Jr, Lorraine Hansberry, Mama, Daddy, Young and Elder Nina and many more. Accompanied by Gina Earl on ukulele and piano, this is a one of a kind “Rhythm Drama” that tributes the deeper levels of the human condition while juxtaposing the superficial expectations placed on black entertainers and the aging black female artist in America.
